Call for Abstracts

The Call for Abstracts is now closed and all abstracts are under review. Authors will be notified of acceptance in mid-August.

Before submitting your abstract, please ensure that you have thoroughly read the below guidelines and criteria.

Proposals must be submitted via the online submission process by the closing date of Friday 14 July 2017.

Abstracts are welcome on any topic. Papers may be delivered in open forum, a specified theme or, alternatively, in relation to one of the symposia scheduled for inclusion in the program.

Symposia will run within the scientific program, and abstract submissions contributing to symposium topics will be shared with the convenors of any relevant symposium for potential inclusion in or association with it. Please note that if you have been invited to present in a specific symposium, you are still required to submit an abstract via this online abstract submission process.  Please click here to view details of scheduled symposia for EcoTAS 2017.



Delegates may submit only one abstract as the presenting author – regardless of presentation format (i.e. poster, speed talk or oral presentation) or whether the presentation is part of a symposium or open forum. Delegates are free to serve as a non-presenting author on multiple abstracts. Delegates are encouraged to present recent research (e.g. typically, work that has not been published in print or electronic media at the time of abstract submission).


EcoTAS 2017 will feature the following presentation types. All are equally valued contributions and different presentation formats may be best suited to different kinds of content. Delegates are encouraged to select the presentation format that best suits the material to be presented.

Oral Presentation (15 minutes: 12 minute talk + 3 minute Q&A)

Typically, oral presentations will be complete stories or largely finished research projects, with clear outcomes and conclusions. They should be placed in a broad ecological context and therefore be of general interest beyond the immediate subject area. They may be studies with complex hypotheses or study designs that require explication.

Oral presentations may be part of an open forum or symposia (but please note presentation lengths may differ in some symposia). Abstracts will be placed in sessions based on themes selected by the submitting author (see below).

Speed Talk (5 minutes: 4 minute talk + 1 minute changeover)

The short duration of speed talks is well-suited to short stories, with one main idea or result, in a topical subject area that could, for example, be published as a short communication. Typically, they will involve relatively simple or well-established methods and study designs that do not require detailed explanation.

Speed talks will be presented in 1-hour blocks of 12 talks (max.) followed by a 30 min. discussion period during which all presenters will be available for discussion with members of the audience.

Poster (Posters will be on display throught the entire conference and provide opportunities for relaxed discussion. Poster presenters MUST be by their poster on the evening of Monday 27 November for the Barbara Rice Memorial Poster Session)

Poster presentations are well suited for works in progress, preliminary results and fairly detailed proposals for imminent research. They are also ideal for reports of new methods and techniques, that might be of relatively narrow interest to researchers in particular fields. Studies that seem ideal for oral presentations can also be presented very effectively as posters.

Poster AND Speed Talk (5 minutes: 4 minute talk + 1 minute changeover, PLUS poster)

Presenters may select the option to present a Speed Talk (5 minutes: 4 minute talk + 1 minute changeover) and also a Poster. Speed talks will be scheduled during the day on Monday 27 November, to allow presenters to draw attention to their poster, and engage in extended discussion during the dedicated poster session. 


The Scientific Committee will attempt to accommodate the preferred presentation type for all delegates, but inevitably the number of oral presentations (15 min) that can be accommodated in the program is limited. In some recent years, the number of delegates requesting oral presentations has exceeded the places available and this trend may continue. In 2017, if the demand for oral presentations exceeds the available time slots, then the Scientific Program Committee will review all abstracts and some delegates may be asked to consider the option of presenting a poster or speed talk.

The criteria used to assess abstracts may include:

  • relevance to the objectives of the Ecological Society of Australia and New Zealand Ecological Society
  • scientific merit, originality and interest
  • compliance with the word count and format requirements for abstracts

Abstracts for 15 min oral presentations may be submitted before all analyses and interpretations of the results have been finalised, but authors MUST report some specific preliminary results. Vague statements such as ‘results will be discussed’ are not acceptable.

  • Abstract title: a brief, interesting and explicit description of the presentation(<15words)
  • Symposium name and/or themes for open programme
  • Name and address of lead presenting author
  • Identification if the presenter is a student (making them eligible for one of the many student prizes)
  • Preferred presentation type (oral presentation, speed talk, poster)
  • Authors’ names (lead author is normally expected to present the material)
  • Authors’ affiliations
  • Abstract (max. length 250 words)
  • Biography of presenting author (max. length 40 words) i.e. name, present role, area of research interest
  • Acknowledgement that you intend registering and attending EcoTAS 2017 if your abstract is accepted

Early submission of abstracts is encouraged. A last minute rush has been known to crash the system, so please submit your abstract well before the closing date of 14 July to avoid frustration.


Abstract notifications will be sent to submitting authors in mid-August 2017.

Authors who submitted their papers for a symposium will be informed of whether their paper has been accepted for inclusion.  Sometimes there are more relevant papers than can be included in the time allocated for symposia.  To their best ability, the scientific committee will schedule these papers to follow directly after the relevant symposium so that the symposium can continue into a thematic session.

Organisers of symposia are responsible for organising and chairing their sessions. Final allocation of presentations to each symposium will be at the discretion of the Scientific Committee. Symposium organisers will be requested to consider the make-up of abstracts for their Symposium between Monday 17 – Friday 28 July 2017, taking account also of submitted abstracts that might be relevant to their topic.  Each Symposium must be finalised by Monday 31 July, in order for the Scientific Committee to finalise the Conference Program and notify authors.
